Davies drops hint over Ambrose’s future
Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies has hinted at the possibility of the club selling Efe Ambrose this transfer window.
The Nigerian defender has just under 12-months left on his current contract at Celtic, and has endured a rough time from Hoops fans and opposing fans during games.
His error against Lincoln Red Imps last week was one of a number of high-profile errors on his behalf over the last four years, and resulted in him being dropped from the squad for the second leg on Wednesday.
As quoted by the Daily Mail, Davies, said:
It’s a situation where if we can get deals done, then obviously the squad gets that little bit bigger and there is more opportunity for players to move on.
But all I can say about Efe is that since we’ve come in here he’s been great to work with every day, his personality and his attitude to training, and he’s given everything he can, every session and every day.
He did it again today. He’s been a pleasure to work with on a day-to-day basis but we’re obviously assessing the whole squad and assessing what we need to bring in to improve and take the team forward and there might be opportunity for players to move on.
Celtic have previously turned down interest from Olympiakos and Maccabi Tel Aviv, but could be set to off-load the unpredictable defender to make way for a new signing.
Ambrose has made 168 appearances for Celtic, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists – and could have played his last game in a Hoops jersey last week in Gibraltar.
Should Celtic sell Ambrose this summer?
Yes
No
One player Celtic have been targeting is central defender Shane Duffy, however Blackburn could be less willing to sell the Irishman after his defensive partner Grant Hanley moved to Newcastle earlier this week.
Celtic fans were left frustrated after no signing was made before last night’s deadline for the third qualifying round squad, but they can still add any new signing to the squad and demote someone currently in the squad, provided they are signed by 11pm on Tuesday night.
