Commons targets return against Barcelona
Kris Commons says he is aiming to be involved this weekend when Celtic take on Barcelona in Dublin.
The veteran midfielder has yet to feature under Brendan Rodgers as he recovers from offseason surgery on his back but is hoping to be in the Carnlough man’s plans this weekend.
Celtic could be up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, and although it is only a friendly, it will provide a good test ahead of the return leg against Astana next Wednesday.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about the International Champions Cup game this Saturday in the Aviva, the 32-year-old said:
I’m doing everything I can to get into the manager’s plans for the game against Barcelona in Dublin at the weekend.
The main thing, though, is to be at the top of my game when – or if – I get the call.
Commons was a pivotal player in the green and white Hoops jersey under Neil Lennon, but became less prominent in the side when Ronny Deila took over two years ago.
Should Kris Commons feature this Saturday?
Yes
No
Despite his age, Commons still provides the squad with much-needed experience, especially in Europe where he has found the next 10 times since his arrival in 2011 from Derby County.
If the creative midfielder doesn’t feature at the weekend, he could push for a place on the bench or even a starting berth against Astana in Paradise on Wednesday evening, as Celtic look to book their place in the play-off round of the Champions League.
