Celtic have progressed to the group stages of the Champions League despite a woeful performance and losing to Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
The Hoops started the game poorly and conceded a penalty for a clumsy foul that was outside the area by Saidy Janko after 14 minutes.
Craig Gordon saved the resulting penalty that was hit with plenty of power, but the ball was right at the Hoops ‘keeper.
The Swiss right-back didn’t look assured at all in the game and could have cost the away side a number of times in the opening 45 minutes for his poor defensive play.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva opened the scoring from a corner kick on 23 minutes as Ben Shar climbed highest to head it into the bottom right corner.
Gordon’s save penalty side in the first-half was quickly forgotten about after a calamitous bit of goalkeeping as he dropped the ball to the feet to Ovidiu Hoban following a collision with Janko.
Here are the player ratings from tonight’s game.
Craig Gordon 4/10
Got down well to save the penalty but could maybe have got to Sahar’s header for Be’er Sheva’s goal. Woeful attempt to get the ball from the cross and cost Celtic a goal.
Saidy Janko 1/10
Gave away a penalty after a clumsy tackle that was just outside the area. Didn’t look assured at all in defence and didn’t pick up runners, which Lustig called him to do a number of times. Collided with Gordon which resulted in the second goal.
Mikael Lustig 6/10
Started the game well but made a few clumsy decisions alongside Janko which could have been costly. Improved in the second half.
Kolo Toure 8/10
Strong game in defence and showed his experience by commanding the defence. Bailed Celtic out several times with timely interceptions and tackles to prevent a goal scoring chance.
Kieran Tierney 6/10
Should have stayed on the near post for the goal. Couldn’t get forward much down the left side as Celtic struggled to keep possession. Defended ok in the game.
Scott Brown 4/10
Beaten to the ball by Sahar for the opening goal of the game from a corner. Laboured through the game and didn’t lead the team as he did in recent weeks.
Nir Bitton 4/10
Didn’t start the game well in midfield and gave the ball away numerous times, misplacing simple passes. Weak in midfield and didn’t control the ball and dictate play like he did in the first leg. Passenger in the game.
Callum McGregor 3/10
Poor game and was anonymous in midfield. Poor touch, poor passing and didn’t press the ball well. Poor pass to Forrest on 39 minutes that ended Celtic’s best attacking chance in the first half.
James Forrest 3/10
Weak holding off a player on the wing on the opening minute which lead to a shot on goal. Worked hard but did very little in terms of alleviating pressure on the Celtic defence or creating any chances.
Leigh Griffiths 3/10
Flagged offside twice early on which didn’t help Celtic get up the field. Took 33 minutes to get his only attempt on goal from outside the box that was easily saved. Failed to hold the ball up or do anything of note in the game.
Scott Sinclair 6/10
The outlet for Gordon when the ‘keeper received the ball from defence. Did his defensive duties well to cover Tierney when he was one-on-one with the winger.
Tom Rogic 5/10
Came on at half-time for James Forrest. Tried to get on the ball and make things happen. Did well to pick out Dembele for Celtic’s best chance in the game.
Moussa Dembele 5/10
Replaced Griffiths after 56 minutes. Came within inches of scoring after a good run down the left wing. Couldn’t get on the ball as Celtic were pegged back and the midfield struggled to get on the ball.
Erik Sviatchenko 6/10
Came on for McGregor with 25 minutes remaining. Solid in defence and took a no-nonsense approach that was needed in the team.
