Two Championship sides chase axed defender
Out of favour Celtic defender Efe Ambrose could be given a way out of Celtic before the transfer window closes.
The Nigerian international is in the final year of his contract, and has fallen down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers since the arrival of Kolo Toure and the return of other central defenders from injury.
According to a report from the Daily Express, Reading manager Jaap Stam could give the 27-year-old a way out of Paradise this summer, with Blackburn also keeping tabs on him if they sell Shane Duffy as expected.
Stam sees Ambrose playing a deep-lying midfield role rather than in defence, where he has cost Celtic a number of times during his four years at the club.
Rodgers began his career at The Royals under Tommy Burns, and the club have also signed former Celtic defender Tyler Blackett from Manchester United.
A number of on-field errors have cost Celtic dearly in big games in Europe and domestically over the years since he arrived at the club in 2012.
Ambrose has made 169 appearances for Celtic, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists – and his last appearance in a Hoops jersey in the 1-1 draw against Astana in the third round of qualifying for the Champions League.
He was subsequently dropped from Celtic’s Champions League squad for new signing Dorus de Vries, and was a substitute in a second string side that faced Inter Milan in Ireland just over a week ago.
I like big Efe. I he goes then good luck to him. I’d rather he stayed though and fought for his place. He loves it here and wants to play for the club. A spell in the reserves might help him find that form of a few years back. There’s a good player in there…anyone remember the Barcelona victory? He was immense in that game, and many others. He needs his confidence back.
