After last night’s disappointing performance, we take a look at five midfielders that would improve Celtic’s current squad.
Celtic have had a wide range of talented midfielders come and go over the years. From StiliyanPetrov to Victor Wanyama, the club has seen a variety of different players perform exceptionally well in their respective roles.
Though, despite the talent we’ve signed in hopes of strengthening our midfield over the years, there seems to be something lacking in the current team.
Skipper Scott Brown remains a solid part of Rodgers’ side, but we don’t really have that consistent player who is able to link-up with him in the middle of the park. NirBitton has been a regular in the first-team for the last two years, but has failed to make any sort of impression in bigger competitions like the Champions League.
Here are the five players that would improve the current Celtic squad under Rodgers.
Conor Hourihane
Irish midfielder Hourihane has been with English Championship side Barnsley since 2014 and has since became the club’s captain. Celtic have been keeping a close eye on him in recent weeks and are cold be monitoring him ahead of the January transfer window.
Jack Cork
Cork has performed consistently in the Premier League for a few years now. He left Southampton last year to join Swansea City, who he’s played for since. His ability to play in either defensive-midfield or the full-back position has benefited his past clubs greatly. A solid and reliable player who could form a partnership with Brown in no time.
John Ogu
Celtic fans will perhaps be familiar with Ogu as he plays with Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva. The Hoops met Be’er Sheva in the Champions League qualifying round in August, where Celtic progressed to the group stages on aggregate. Ogu is a tricky, attacking midfielder who has proven to cause problems for the opposition. The Nigerian international wouldn’t be the most favourable signing, but he could definitely be a good one.
James McCarthy
McCarthy began his career at Hamilton Accies and has since went on to play for Premier League side Everton. He grew up in Glasgow supporting The Hoops. There’s no doubting his talent, which is why he’d be a fantastic addition to Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Lucas Leiva
The Brazilian international has spent the last ten seasons at Liverpool, building a solid career in the Premier League in the process. Injuries have been an issue at times but that hasn’t stopped the centre-midfielder from performing on a consistent basis. At 29-years-old, Lucas may want to move on to other things. Though out of the players on this list, Lucas would definitely be the least likely signing for us to make.
