Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his satisfaction regarding the way in which his side dug deep to find a late winner in their League Cup semi-final win over Rangers, as reported by the club’s official Twitter account.

I thought how we went about the game today was brilliant. We stopped them building and our press was at a high level. Every element of the game was at a high level. Consider that after a tough Champions League game (against Borussia Monchengladbach), the players deserve credit.

Moussa Dembele proved to be the difference in the tie, with his flick in the 87th minute winning the game for his side and consequently sending them through to the final of the League Cup.

Celtic dominated the whole game and shut Rangers out well. Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic both had good chances to put their side in the driving seat but failed to take them.

It was just the goals. We had that similar performance (to the 5-1 win over Rangers) but just didn’t finish the opportunities. Their goalkeeper had a touch onto the bar, disallowed goal that looked harsh and had other chances.

Eric Sviatchenko had a goal disallowed, also, but none of this mattered as Celtic’s efforts were eventually rewarded through Dembele’s excellently taken late finish.

It shows the mentality of the team. They kept going and got their reward. Hopefully the players feel their performance today and in the last game has been a real top level and got their reward. It’s been a great start to the season for us. You see the collective spirit and mentality.

Leigh Griffiths’ ball to Dembele was inch-perfect and he played a huge part in turning the tide of the match, playing a pivotal role in helping Dembele to his 14th goal of the season.

The players and what they are giving; they are performing magnificently well. To rubber stamp that you need trophies and to win trophies you need to get to the final.

We’ve got to the final now and it was a great performance deserving of getting to the final.

Celtic will now face Aberdeen in next month’s final at Hampden giving Rodgers the chance to win his first piece of silverware in charge of the club.
