Brendan Rodgers is keen to offer a trio of new deals to Celtic players after impressing the Irishman this season.
Emilio Izaguirre was expected to leave Celtic with his contact expiring in the summer, but an injury to Kieran Tierney has given the Honduran another chance at the club.
Fellow defender Mikael Lustig is another player Rodgers is keen to keep on the Celtic books, and his contract also expires in the summer.
And December Player of the Month Stuart Armstrong is also expected to be offered a new deal which Rodgers has spoken about in recent days.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about the defensive duo, the manager said:
I believe there’s progress. I met with Peter Lawwell before I came away and I believe that one is not too far away and hopefully that can be done. Mikael gives his all and is up for every game – and just as importantly every training session.
He lives his life well and has good focus now that he’s been at Celtic for a few years. Obviously, it has to be right for him and the club – but I’d be hopeful we could organise that.
When I came in, there was maybe a general perception that he’d [Izaguirre] go, but I spoke to him and I felt that he had a role to play.
I think he has done extremely well. Kieran is a special talent, but Emilio came in and did very well for us in a tough run of games. I like Emilio – he’s very robust. He trains every day, he works hard and is very professional and if I have Kieran and Emilio as starter and cover player then I’d be happy.
We’ll talk more on that between now and the end of the season.
All three players have played a role in helping Celtic to their best start in history under Rodgers and reach Champions League football for the first time in three years.
A 24-game unbeaten domestic run, a 19 point lead atop the league table and a League Cup trophy has seen fans bask in the glory and crave a first domestic treble since 2001.
To do so, they will need to win their opening game of the Scottish Cup and 2017 following the winter break against Albion Rovers on January 22nd at the Excelsior Stadium.
