Brendan Rodgers has criticised the state of Celtic Park’s playing surface after his side defeated Motherwell 2-0 in yesterday’s league clash.

Moussa Dembele opened the scoring and converted a penalty for the champions inside 33 minutes, with James Forrest adding to Motherwell’s misery with a fine strike seven minutes later.

Though despite another comfortable win for his side, Rodgers complained about the state of the Parkhead pitch and insisted the Celtic board must invest in a new surface at the end of the season.

Rodgers has asked for a Desso pitch, which is a combination of synthetic fibres sown together with the grass which most Premier League clubs currently use.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the win, he said:

I think it is an old pitch here, so we need to modernise the field.  It is a concern for me when you are trying to entertain supporters and play a level of game, the pitch is vital.

Our players have to deal with a real difficult pitch. Technically they are having to make sure of their touch at times before they get it under control. They can’t play first time, it is difficult.

So I think how they deal with the game and how creative they are is a huge testament to them. Some of our football was very good in what was a very difficult pitch even though it might not look it.

You are looking for fast football and speed in your game, the level we are looking to play. We actually go away to some grounds and play better because the opposition pitch is better and this here slows us down.

The victory means that the Hoops have now went 31 domestic games without defeat and a run of 20-straight wins during that time.

They are now currently 27 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

A domestic treble is still on the cards too, with Rodgers’ side drawn to play Paisley side St. Mirren at home in March in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.

Celtic’s next fixture is at home to Hamilton Academical next Saturday.
