Celtic full back Cristian Gamboa has suffered a torn thigh muscle whilst away on international duty with Costa Rica.
The 27-year-old had been representing his homeland in the Gold Cup but his participation in that tournament is now over as he had to be stretchered off during the 1-1 draw with Canada.
The player has flown back to Costa Rica for treatment, as confirmed by Costa Rica’s Team Doctor Alejandro Ramirez.
Cristian has a first-degree tear in the right biceps femoris. If he stayed with the squad, he would run the risk of his injury getting worse. So we decided to withdraw him from the tournament and send him to Costa Rica for treatment. He will rest and then get two weeks of therapy there.
Gamboa, who featured 21 times for Celtic during their amazing treble winning campaign, looks likely to miss any further Champions League qualifiers and faces a battle to be ready for the start of the SPFL season.
