A classy performance from Paris Saint-Germain saw Celtic fall to defeat in their opening game of the Champions League group stages.
Neymar opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a cool finish over Craig Gordon after Adrien Rabiot carved open the Celtic defence with a wonderful assist.
Youngster Anthony Ralston made his Champions League debut and was caught flat-footed by the Brazilian’s turn of pace who scored his fifth goal against Celtic in the competition.
Kylian Mbappe doubled Celtic’s lead from close range after Neymar turned provider on 33 minutes for the youngster.
Ralston was again suspect defensively as Neymar lost his man with a crossfield run and was left unmarked at the back post.
Jozo Simunovic gave away a soft penalty after pulling back Edinson Cavani inside the box and the Uruguayan converted the spot kick on 40 minutes.
Mikael Lustig turned the ball into his own net on 82 minutes and Cavani got his second of the night converting a superb header with five minutes remaining.
Here are the player ratings for tonight’s game.
Craig Gordon 4/10
Good save from Cavani to deny the striker from distance. Could do little about the five goals.
Anthony Ralston 4/10
Two good defensive headers to clear dangerous crosses in the opening minutes. Caught out by Neymar’s run in behind for the opening goal. Didn’t track Neymar’s run back across the field who squared it to Mbappe. Did well to win back the ball and went on a brilliant run at the defence but wasn’t supported. Positioned himself in a good area a number of times in the game and did well to block the ball and stop Mbappe making it four nil.
Mikael Lustig 4/10
Good positioning and touch to win the ball when the away side were on the attack and made a further timely challenge on Neymar. Got fortunate with a loose pass which Cavani got a touch on.
Jozo Simunovic 4/10
Good defensive header to clear the danger and sharp into the tackle to win possession. Pulled back Cavani giving away a penalty which was converted. Brilliant tackle on Cavani at the start of the second half.
Kieran Tierney 5/10
Beaten too easily by Mbappe down the line a number of times. Made a good run down the wing to overlap Sinclair and his ball into the box just went over the heads of the Celtic players. Fantastic cross to Griffiths at the start of the second half and should’ve tested the ‘keeper.
Scott Brown 4/10
Won the ball several times early on but struggled to keep up with the PSG midfield trio and was chasing shadows a lot of the time. Good defensive tackle inside the box to take the ball away from Cavani.
Olivier Ntcham 3/10
Cleared the dangerous twice early doors and had Celtic’s first attempt on goal which went well wide. Really first-half and couldn’t get going against a far superior midfield trio. Improved in the second half for a short period but still didn’t show enough in the game.
Stuart Armstrong 3/10
Good tackle to win the ball and get Sinclair on the move in space. Game passed him by and was taken off at half-time.
Patrick Roberts 5.5/10
Hesitated on the ball when facing his man and was dispossessed in the opening stages of the game but improved as the half went on. Won several free kicks making positive runs at the man and cutting inside to a more central position. Frustrating night on the wing towards then end and became too tentative as he tired.
Scott Sinclair 5/10
Should have got to Alves quicker after he whipped in a very dangerous cross. Poor start to the game passing the ball and running at the defence in trouble. Allowed Alves in behind who failed to control the ball at the crucial moment. Shot from outside the box after a good run was blocked. Brilliant run around the outside and forced the ‘keeper to make a save from close range.
Leigh Griffiths 5/10
Pressed well from the front in the opening minutes. Super free-kick from distance forced the ‘keeper to make a save. Had a great chance to score but elected to head the ball back across goal to Sinclair. Worked hard but didn’t get any luck up front.
Tom Rogic 5/10
Came on at half-time for Armstrong. Needed to support Ralston and Roberts when they had chances to attack and create a chance. Made an impact and made more forward runs in an advanced position in midfield.
Odsonne Edouard N/A
Came on for Griffiths with 16 minutes left in the game.
James Forrest N/A
Replaced Roberts with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Could have done more to close down the cross for the fifth goal.
