Rodgers believes Rangers stalemate was a fair result
Brendan Rodgers believes the goalless draw against Rangers at Celtic Park was a fair result from the point of view of either side.
The Hoops dominated things in the first half but couldn’t break the deadlock despite having some great chances to find the back of the net.
In the second half things didn’t seem so promising for Rodgers’ side, as Graeme Murty’s men seemed to get into the swing of things more.
The Hoops boss is convinced that either side should walk away happy after an even game produced no goals in the end.
As quoted by the Daily Record, the Irishman said:
It was a very frantic game. I thought we created the better chances in the first half. It wasn’t a great game of quality throughout the 90 minutes but certainly we had the better chances of the first half.
But Rangers will say they had the better second half with chances and opportunities. We looked as though we could threaten but we couldn’t really make that breakthrough in the final third of the pitch.
We’ve shown if we get that goal, especially early on then that really sets us up and opens the game up for us but all in all it was probably a point for both teams that was deserved.
Referring to a good chance that winger Scott Sinclair missed in the first-half, Rodgers went on to say:
It has done in the past in these games but we had those opportunities and Scott had that one at the back post which he tries to slot away but he’s trying to be too precise instead of just hitting the target.
The longer it goes on you give oxygen to the other team but like I say they had one or two chances second. One really good chance where Craig Gordon makes an unbelievable save so for us I’ve seen it over many years in these games that as the home team you can end up losing it 1-0 so for us to keep another clean sheet in our ninth game of the month and there’s probably a bit of tiredness in the performance as well then I can only give credit to the players.
It was a brilliant atmosphere today and like I say, a point was probably deserved for both teams.
Craig Gordon was forced to make two important saves, one from an acrobatic effort from Tavernier and another after a close-range header by Alfredo Morelos took a deflection off of Gordon’s leg and went out for a corner.
The goalless draw is just the second competitive one since Rodgers was appointed as manager in May 2016, following on from the 0-0 draw at home to Rosenborg in the Champions League qualifiers in July.
