Craig Gordon admits he would have regretted Chelsea move
Celtic’s number one Craig Gordon has revealed he is glad his dream switch to Chelsea, in this transfer window last year, eventually fell through.
The goalkeeper has said he now realises it would’ve been a mistake to leave Celtic for Stamford Bridge and turn his back on Celtic’s incredible end to the season where they completed an unbeaten domestic treble.
Gordon was a key part in making Brendan Rodgers only the third manager in the club’s history to scoop up all three trophies in the one season.
However, this time last year, a £4 million switch to the eventual Premier League champions looked a real possibility until Rodgers put a stop to any chance of a move.
As quoted by The Daily Record, Gordon showed his relief at remaining at Parkhead and becoming an ‘Invincible’ despite being keen on a move at the time.
To do that in Scotland with Celtic, it’s something that will be remembered forever. To be a part of that – I probably played the most games of that Invincible run – as something to look back on in your career, these are the things you value.
It was the last week of the window, the Chelsea bid. It wasn’t accepted and I stayed.
But at the same time we were in the middle of a great season where it looked as if we were going to do something really special and everyone felt that an undefeated season was a possibility.
The 35-year-old played the most games in Celtic’s 69 matches unbeaten with 55 appearances in the incredible run which re-wrote the history books.
The former Sunderland and Hearts stopper has had an up and down season so far with many criticising his distribution skills, however, he has really shown his superb shot-stopping ability with some unbelievable saves this campaign against Rangers and Hibernian in particular.
On the international scene, Gordon recently joined an elite club after earning his 50th Scotland cap, making him just the third keeper to do so.
With 21 games left for Celtic in their quest for back-to-back trebles, the Scot will be confident he can remain the first choice goalkeeper for the champions.
