Rodgers hints towards potential move for Bain
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted towards a summer move for on-loan goalkeeper Scott Bain, the Daily Record have reported.
The Hoops boss was full of praise for the ‘keeper when quizzed about his future at the club, admitting that he could recognise his potential to play for a club of Celtic’s prestige.
Bain is currently on loan from Dundee and in the absence of the club’s senior goalkeepers of late, has impressed. Craig Gordon is continuing to recover from a long-term injury, while Dorus de Vries is also nursing a knock.
Sometimes someone’s misfortune means good fortune for you and that was the way it worked out for Scott. I wanted to see him at some point in the season and I needed to put him in if we were going to look at anything beyond this season.
The 26-year-old was one of Celtic’s star performers in their recent Glasgow Derby triumph. Rodgers saw his side come away from Ibrox with a dramatic 3-2 win, in which Bain impressed.
I thought Scott Bain was absolutely outstanding last week to come into a game of that magnitude. If you can play in that game as a Celtic player away at Ibrox with that atmosphere against your biggest rivals, then you know you can play in any game of football for Celtic.
It’s difficult to come in as back-up goalkeeper, but the likes of (goalkeeping coach) Stevie Woods, who has known him longer than I, have always said that he’s a player that could play for us.
Although it’s somewhat unlikely that Bain will secure the number one jersey as Gordon continues to make steps in his recovery, it seems Rodgers is open to the idea of recruiting him on a permanent basis this summer.
Should Celtic look to sign Bain?
Yes
No
It happened naturally that he got in and I thought his performance and temperament in that game showed me everything to say that he can play for Celtic.
Bain’s deal at Dundee expires at the end of the season and Rodgers is likely to be among those who are interested in signing him on a free transfer.
