Rodgers says abuse players receive is ‘disgraceful’
Following the verbal abuse towards Scott Sinclair at Glasgow Airport after the 3-2 victory in the Old Firm derby.
Brendan Rodgers has since spoken out on behalf of all footballers which are subject to abuse, describing it as ‘disgraceful’ and demands a larger punishment for the offenders. Rodgers was particularly distressed that players receive stick in their private lives.
It is poor that sort of thing still happens – in a private lounge at the airport, as well.
Following the incident, 3 men were stopped from boarding their flights, however, no further action was taken.
Speaking on Sinclair’s situation, Rodgers stated:
I spoke to him about it and he’s okay. It’s not a nice thing to have to deal with. You are a footballer on the pitch, but you are also a human being, as well. ‘That doesn’t entitle people to come up and think they can have a go at you… I’ve felt for a long time something should be done about it.
Rodgers also stressed his irritation with the Jamie Carragher situation, and despite Carragher’s actions being out of order, the driver, who provoked the situation, faced little punishment.
There’s no way people should get away with it. Look at Jamie’s situation, there’s a guy who is driving and endangering the life of his daughter. It’s absolutely nonsense.
