As far as summer signings go, the arrival of Saidy Janko to Celtic Park and his permanent departure from Manchester United was certainly a shock to people that seen him play.
The Swiss Under-19 international can operate anywhere down the right-hand side, but will most likely be used by Deila as a direct replacement for right-back Adam Matthews, who left earlier this summer to join Sunderland for a fee of £2 million. Janko can also play centre-back if required – versatility that can only be a good thing for Celtic.
His pace and attack-minded nature will suit the Norwegian’s philosophy of high intensity, intricate passing and attractive football. He can provide width for Celtic on the right-hand side, using his crossing ability while overlapping Mackay-Steven or Forrest in particular, who has a tendency to cut inside. This will only assist Celtic’s attacking options in the final third and the Swiss can also provide an outlet with his pace on the counter-attack on European nights if called upon by Deila.
Janko failed to break into United’s first since joining them from FC Zurich for £700,00 two years ago although he featured regularly for the Under-21 side in the early part of the season. He spent the second half of the season at loan at Bolton, making 10 appearances and linking up with former Celtic manager, Neil Lennon.
A four-year deal for the 19-year-old is another astute piece of business by Ronny Deila in the transfer market. In his two summer transfer windows Deila has acquired the likes of Denayer and Guidetti on loan and Derrick Boyata for £1.5 million from Manchester City. He also signed Craig Gordon on a free transfer – possibly the best business of the lot considering his record of 32 clean sheets in 56 appearances.
