The images that have surfaced on the Internet yesterday and in newspapers today led to a public outcry across social media and Celtic football club have taken note.
A club originally set up by Brother Walfrid to help the working-class Irish community in Glasgow’s East end is once again giving back.
Celtic FC Foundation announced earlier today that its share of the proceeds from the 30th Anniversary Jock Stein events will be donated to assisting those affected by the current refugee crisis.
All the funds raised will be used to help those most in need as Celtic’s foundation will partner an international aid agency to carry this out.
Chief Executive of Celtic, Peter Lawwell said:
Celtic was established as a football club to help people in need and this ethos remains a fundamental part of our club almost 130 years after our formation.
Tony Hamilton, Chief Executive of Celtic FC Foundation, said:
This is absolutely the right thing for us to do. Our club was formed by immigrants, many of whom had escaped the devastation of the great famine.
It really is a club like no other. The great work of our founder still lives on within the club today.
Let’s hope as many organisations and clubs can help in any way possible to help those in need right now.
It’s also a time to commend Bayern Munich football club taking a stand earlier today and setting up a ‘training camp’ and donating €1 million for refugee projects to help those who need it most.
