Having got through the summer transfer window signing four defenders and losing van Dijk to Southampton on deadline day, Deila has admitted his new backline will take more time to come to fruition.
Celtic also lost right-back Adam Matthews earlier in the transfer window to Sunderland and left-back Kieran Tierney has emerged from the development squad, making his second start of the season against Raith Rovers last night.
With all the new faces in the fray, Celtic manager Ronny Deila wants to see more from his players to decide what defence he will opt for, as quoted by STV.
It’s hard to say [who are the best] because I haven’t seen enough of every player.
We work a lot in defence now in training so we get the structure right and then we have to see in the performances who is best together over time.
Deila did say that the variety of options and their quality is a good thing for the team.
I have eight or nine good defenders and that’s good.
And looking back on the squad twelve months ago and looking at it now, Deila is happy with how his team is progressing to suit his style.
We are in a better place, we’re still in every competition and we got a point against Ajax so if you think about results it’s better, but I see beyond that as well. I see a culture here that players are getting better and better.
