Former Celtic legend and goalkeeper Pat Bonner says Ronny Deila will only save his job by obtaining a league and cup double and progressing in Europe.
After an abysmal performance last time out in the Europa League against Molde, fans directed a lot of anger towards the Norwegian, with many believing it was the final straw.
The next nine days are crucial for Celtic, who face Hearts, Aberdeen and Molde in three different competitions, all with differing outcomes and consequences.
As quoted by the Daily Mail, Bonner said:
Should Ronny Deila be given another crack at the Champions League next season? If he gets Celtic out of this Europa League group and wins another double then I think he will.
However, if he can’t do those things then it’s going to be very difficult for him. That’s what he’ll be judged on.
I don’t think that Celtic are getting better in Europe, though. The evidence is there to say that they haven’t progressed. Europe’s been a big disappointment in many ways, there’s no question about that.
And unfortunately for Celtic managers these days, compared to when I played, getting into the Champions League is now the benchmark. That’s the ultimate goal and if you don’t get there then you’ve got to do well in the Europa League – get out of the group at least.
A treble would be a really good achievement but it’s not an easy thing to win.
Wednesday’s trip to Tynecastle will be crucial to achieving one part of the bargain, as it would send the Hoops into the semi-final of the League Cup. But Bonner isn’t brimming with confidence ahead of the showdown against Hearts.
Will Ronny change and adapt at Hearts in the League Cup on Wednesday night? Probably not and it’s going to be a tough game for them but they should still have enough to reach the semi-finals.
On Saturday, the welcoming of Aberdeen to Paradise will be a vital game against Celtic’s main challengers for the title. The Dons haven’t won in their last five games, and a win would put Celtic seven points clear.
And, of course, Thursday night is very important for Celtic’s European aspirations as Molde visit Glasgow.
Molde at home is a must-win but there is no reason why they can’t beat all of those teams.
Another negative piece from this so called Celtic site. Can I remind you we went 4pts clear on Sunday
