Deila hopes it will be third time lucky in Champions League

Ronny Deila hopes to get third chance to take Celtic to the promised land of Champions League football and believes he is the man to do it.

After another slump on the European stage, Celtic have been left in a precarious position heading into the final two match days.

The 2-1 defeat left fans dejected and frustrated as Deila admitted he didn’t get a lot of sleep on Thursday night, as quoted by the Irish News.

I think we make a lot of mistakes, we make the same mistakes every game in Europe.

I know we need to get better, but we are still not out of the group. People can say it will be hard, but it is possible.

A victory against Ajax and we are suddenly into it again and we can do something in Turkey.

Deila also looked to his predecessor’s time in charge at the club and noted that Neil Lennon didn’t deliver Champions League football until his third full season in charge, when they beat Barcelona and reached the last-16 of the competition.

When you see the history of this club, they have had a manager before here who has struggled in Europe in the beginning and made it right.

And they stand by their manager. That’s what I expect with me as well. I really want to be here. I love being here. I love the club and the fans, everything and I am really ambitious.

Celtic are on the verge of exiting at the group stages of the Europa League having picked up just two points so far in the group.

The Hoops must win their final two games against Fenerbahce and Ajax to have any hope of progressing.

Despite the failure in Europe, Deila is confident in his own ability and what he is trying to do at Celtic.

I know all my teams have progressed. I know what I’m building, I know what I want and all the players know how we want to do it. I’ve seen managers before having time and then suddenly they make it and I’m going to do it as well, together with the players and the staff.

Putting the European disappointment aside, Celtic are preparing to face Ross County on Sunday before the final international break of the calendar year.
