David Moyes, Harry Redknapp, Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers. Managers who all know how to win, right?
Surprisingly not, given how some people hail them.
Those are just some of the names being thrown around by Celtic fans on social media to replace Ronny Deila in recent times. Yet, none of them won a domestic title or done anything similar to what Deila achieved at Stromgodest.
Problem is, only one of them would ever be good enough and fit in at Celtic, and I’m not convinced he would take the job in the current climate.
We will start with that manager, and it’s David Moyes. The former Everton and Manchester United manager is currently in Spain managing Real Sociedad and thy are struggling. This season, they have picked up just nine points from 11 games and sit 16th in La Liga. (He has now been sacked). He also failed at Manchester United although many know he inherited a ver poor, aging squad.
However, I believe he would thrive at Celtic. Moyes dealt with a similar market to Celtic at Everton for a decade and consistently built a solid team with good recruitment and limited funds. He managed to break into the top half of the table regularly, finishing fourth in 2005 and fifth on two occasions in 2008 and 2009.
The overriding question is, would David Moyes come to Celtic? I would like to see him in the Celtic dugout, but I’m not entirely convinced he would be willing to join a one-horse race league. Does the league need to be more competitive to attract someone of his pedigree?

Next up we have the illustrious Harry Redknapp. And I say that very loosely and sarcastically. He’s the man who would take Celtic to the gutter and they would join another club in the grave.
Portsmouth, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers all experienced the work of Redknapp. Successful? Undoubtedly. Sustainable? Absolutely not. He’s the king of financially running football clubs in England and I laugh when I see his name remotely linked with Celtic. All because he talks about our club so positively in recent TV appearances. Would you ever catch yourselves on. He can talk the talk, but can’t walk the walk. If you don’t believe me, ask fans of clubs he managed previously.

Next is former Celtic player Paul Lambert. He’s still young, he failed at Aston Villa and never managed a game in Europe. How is that an upgrade to Ronny Deila? Lambert wouldn’t bring anything new and would simply replicate Neil Lennon, which I’m not saying is a bad thing, but it wouldn’t work with the cultural shift underway at the club.
Owner Randy Lener had control of their transfer policy and opted to buy youngsters in the first two seasons Lambert was in charge. His challenge was to develop the players while building the club back up. After growing impatient with this philosophy, he bought more experienced players for Lambert’s third year In charge. By February, Lambert was gone, showing that buying experience doesn’t always work and I don’t feel Lambert is the answer to Celtic’s problems or that he can solve them.

And finally, we look at Brendan Rodgers. A man who was very successful at Swansea but unconvincing in a managerial role at Liverpool. I’m not sure Celtic would appeal to him and again, he has as much experience as Deila in Europe so isn’t necessarily an upgrade. If he can get the right recruitment team behind him, he could deliver for Celtic. He would please the fans a lot more, as he rotates formations from 4-3-3 to a diamond or even the dreaded 4-2-3-1 and changes personnel whilst playing positive football.

Sadly, we won’t appeal to the level of manager we want and that’s due to the state of Scottish football. So, we either accept who we have or we must look elsewhere.
Accept who we have? Not a chance of it, our team is going backwards alarmingly! Does anyone remember Ronnie questioning the fitness of the players when he took over from Lennie? The fitness levels of his team are shocking. I am a 48 year old man and I honestly can say that I could outrun virtually every player Ronnie is training. He hasn’t a clue tactically either. No more European embarrassments please. No experience in Europe would be any worse than Ronnie with experience. If we played Icelandic teams all the time Ronnie’s record would look great. Play any full time teams and its appalling.
Lot of shite only got Ronnie there to control him , any half decent manager would demand funds for players , which he would not get , so he would leave
They are all other clubs rejects who have failed why would Celtic want any of the above?
Would not have any of them
Think Ronnie needs his own staff not Collins or Kennedy
Stay the course with Ronny Deila. None of the options mentioned would give our young players the chance of first team football. Do you think Tierney would be making the breakthrough today under any of these men? I really do think we need a reality check. Yes, we should be beating the likes of Molde and Malmo on a regular basis and we need to and will address this under Ronny. Celtic’s biggest challenge in today’s football financial environment will always be keeping our best players together for any length of time. We lost arguably our two best players this season in Denayer and Van Dijk and it’s so, so tough to replace such quality in quick time. As Gerry1D says above, let’s also look at Ronny’s coaching staff which I contend is not of the quality we need. Couldn’t we get Mjallby back for instance. Efe Ambrose played under him and in the famous 2-1 Barcelona game, so with the right defensive coach we can get it right at the back. Keep the faith. HH.
