Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor was left out of Sunday’s team after being charged with drink driving as Ronny Deila avoided drawing too much attention to the incident in the public eye.

Prior to Celtic’s 2-0 win over East Kilbride in the Scottish Cup, news broke that McGregor was arrested on suspicion of driving over the legal limit on Thursday night.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been a mainstay in Deila’s midfield this season, scoring four times and adding five assists in his 23 appearances.

After coming through the academy and having a successful loan spell with Notts County, the dynamic midfielder made his Celtic debut in the second round of the Champions League qualifiers against KR Reykjavik.

Following this incident however, there will be question marks about his professionalism to be drink driving three days before the Scottish Cup fifth round tie.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, Deila didn’t want to dwell on the issue and said:

There has been a lot of pressure on him over the last few days. He was not ready to play in the game today.

This is a matter which is in the hands of the police. The timing wasn’t perfect but what’s done is done.

Deila watched on as his Hoops side stuttered to a 2-0 win over fifth-tier side East Kilbride at the Excelsior stadium, raising further questions about his tenure at Celtic.
