The Hoops have been known to dip into the free agent market in the past, most recently Colin Kazim-Richards, Carlton Cole, Saidy Janko.
Sometimes it has worked – Mikael Lustig, Joe Ledley, Charlie Mulgrew, Craig Gordon and Bobo Balde are just some names.
Other times it’s not gone to plan – with names like Rabiu Ibrahim, Freddie Ljunberg, Cha Di-Rui and Milan Misun springing to mind.
With many fans expecting, or in some cases hoping, for departures, there are still some other players available on free transfers who Celtic could also bring in given their limited spending power.
Here’s a look at seven free agents Celtic could be targeting this summer to bolster their squad.
Pele van Anholt
The right-back has made 169 appearances in the Dutch league for SC Heerenveen and will be available to sign this summer on a Bosman deal. The 24-year-old can also play left-back if required and has made a number of appearances in European football.
Fabio
The 25-year-old defender, who can play at left and right would be a similar player to Adam Matthews who left the club last summer and offer Celtic versatility in defence. He made 56 appearances at Manchester United and has made 69 appearances to date for Cardiff City. He has both Champions League and international experience for Brazil.
Alexandre Coeff
Another versatile defender who can operate at both right-back and centre-back and is currently playing for Gazélec Ajaccio. The French Ligue 1 side are threatened by relegation and could allow the 24-year-old to walk if they are relegated. He’s made 26 appearances this season and has also represented France from U16 to U21 level.
Shay Logan
The experienced defender has supposedly been contacted by Celtic in recent weeks. Fans will be very familiar with the right back from Aberdeen who has scored four goals and provided four assists this season. The 28-year-old has made 100 appearances for the Dons and would provide reliability in defence.
Paul McGinn
A player linked in recent days to Celtic, who would also offer Celtic some defensive cover at right-back. The 25-year-old’s contract is due to run out in summer, but the Hoops could face competition for the brother of Hibs midfielder John, with Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic keeping tabs on the defender.
Wout Weghorst
The 23-year-old striker was linked with a move to Celtic towards the end of the transfer window and they could reignite their interest in the summer to secure a suitable back-up striker to Leigh Griffiths. The Dutch striker has scored 18 goals in his 63 appearances for his current club Heracles Almelo.
Christian Santos
The Venezuelan striker has scored 17 goals in 29 appearances for Dutch side NEC and was linked with a move to Celtic in January. He will become a free agent in the summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal and the lure of potential Champions League football could see him move to Celtic.
