New Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers wants to get Kieran Tierney tied down to a long-term deal at the club after reports that there were clubs looking to take him away from Parkhead.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool were linked with the 19-year-old in recent weeks but Rodgers says that Celtic are looking to get his current contract extended.
As reported by Michael Baillie of the Express, Rodgers was asked if he intends to give Tierney a new deal and responded as such:
Yes, I think the club will do that. They have spoken behind the scenes and I am sure that will take place. The club are well underway with that. The kid will be a top player.
The former Liverpool boss also made it clear that he thinks Celtic is the best place for the young defender to continue to develop for at least the next few years.
He’s at a top club. If you’re a 19-year-old and you’re playing for Celtic in the way that we will do, it’s the ideal place for him to be. What then happens in two, three, four years, whatever, we will see. But at the moment he’s best suited at this club and he’s very happy to be here in the conversations I’ve had. He’s a wonderful talent.
Tierney impressed fans and pundits alike with his performances at left-back as Celtic won another Scottish Premier League title and his good form was rewarded by Scotland manager Gordon Strachan who gave him his first international cap.
