Moussa Dembele and Scott Brown scored crucial second half goals for Celtic after all their terrific work in the first half was undone in two minutes by Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
It was a game of two halves for the Hoops as they showed great intent in the first half only to switch off at the start of the second half and allow the away side back into the game.
Tom Rogic opened the scoring for Celtic on nine minutes after Scott Sinclair and the ‘keeper David Goresh collided on the edge of the area, and the Aussie had the simple job of tapping the ball into an empty net.
Griffiths doubled Celtic’s lead with a bullet header from James Forrest’s cross on 36 minutes putting clear daylight between the two sides.
Kolo Toure and Sinclair played a pivotal role in creating the goal following a powerful run by the centre-back into space that was created by Sinclair’s run across the field from the left side.
Six minutes later Griffiths scored again after winning a free-kick and fired the ball into the top right corner from the edge of the area.
Celtic’s defensive midfielders Callum McGregor and Scott Brown were at fault for the two goals, the first needlessly playing the offside trap and Brown didn’t track the runner on the edge of the area for the second.
Substitute Dembele scored from a corner with 15 minutes remaining and Brown added a fifth on 85 minutes to put Celtic in a good position going into reverse leg next Tuesday.
