Rodgers on why the Glasgow Derby is unique

Brendan Rodgers has revealed why he believes the Glasgow Derby against newly promoted side Rangers is unique.

The two sides faced each other in last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final as the Hoops lost out on penalties, which effectively signalled the end of Ronny Deila’s reign at Celtic.

Celtic have started the season in good form, winning their opening three games in the league, scoring 10 goals against the three sides who finished second, third and fourth last season.

Speaking to Celtic TV, the 43-year-old said:

It’s games that I have watched, games that I have listened to all my life, so to actually be involved in pole position in the game is going to be exciting, especially being the first game at home.

But this game is unique in itself. It’s a very historic game between Celtic and Rangers. And having supported and felt the emotion of them, they are always tense, sometimes they are not the best of games. No matter what you say to players, sometimes the whole intensity and occasion can make it difficult for football.

Having managed in the Merseyside derby and the South Wales Derby between Swansea and Cardiff, Rodgers has been in the dugout for derby games – but none quite like this.

Being a lifelong Celtic fan, Rodgers grew up watching the Old Firm fixtures which ended in 2012 following Rangers liquidation.

Rodgers will be looking for his first win over Celtic’s Glasgow rivals and will hope lightning doesn’t strike twice after last year’s loss.
