Roy Keane hits out at Celtic’s mindset

Former Celtic player Roy Keane has hit out at the players and fans mindset for accepting humiliating defeats in Europe.

Celtic have lost to semi-professional side Lincoln Red Imps, Hapoel Be’er Sheva and most recently Barcelona in European competition this season, and Keane believes the mindset being fostered at the club is part of the reason this happens.

Brendan Rodgers side suffered a humbling 7-0 defeat just three days after handily beating Rangers 5-1 in the Glasgow Derby.

Speaking about Celtic and their mentality on ITV, Keane said:

On one hand we’re being told Celtic are a great club, great tradition, great history and they go and lose 7-0 to Barcelona and people are almost saying ‘these things happen it’s acceptable’.

The previous weekend they won 5-1 against one of the worst Rangers teams I’ve seen in a long time.

I just think they need to do a lot better in Europe – easier said than done of course and this time it’s obviously difficult with the group they are in.

The whole mindset has to change and don’t accept particularly away from home being the whipping boys of Europe.

They’ve got to change the mindset. I’m on about the qualifying games when they were scraping through then celebrating like they’d won the bloody thing.

It’s Celtic they’re a huge club they need to do a lot better.

Keane was thought to be one of the men in the running for the vacant managerial position in May after Ronny Deila revealed he was stepping down, but the club later chose Rodgers.

Celtic are in Champions League action again in just under a fortnight when they take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in their opening home game of the group stages.
