Celtic enter talks about joining European breakaway league

Celtic are one of the clubs who have held initial talks about forming a new multinational league, according to reports.

Anders Horsholt, a director of FC Copenhagen, told reporters that he’s been in contact with teams from Belgium, Holland, Scotland and Scandinavia about forming a new competition.

As well as Celtic, he’s spoken to officials from Ajax, Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Feyenoord, Malmo FF, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers, and Rosenborg and whilst things are still at a very early stage, he did say that the formation of such a competition could lead to the clubs involved leaving their national leagues.

It looks like the idea of this new proposal came after it was announced that there would be changes to the Champions League after 2018. From that date onwards, there will be a guaranteed four clubs England, Spain, Italy and Germany in the group stages of the tournament, which reduces the chances of clubs from other nations getting in.

Currently, clubs from those countries have to face qualifiers, but that will no longer be the case.

It looks like the so-called ‘bigger’ leagues in Europe are looking to form a monopoly, so this breakaway league could give some power back to teams from other nations.
