Celtic set to offer Lustig a new deal

Mikael Lustig is set to be offered a new contract by Celtic after impressing Brendan Rodgers so far this season.

The Swedish international is out of contract in the summer, and revealed last month that he has no intention of leaving the club if he’s offered a new deal.

After scoring international duty, the defender picked up a knee injury and is out for today’s game against Motherwell.

Speaking about Lustig to the Herald Scotland, the manager said:

Mikael is someone I definitely want to keep at the club. I actually spoke to him on Thursday about that.

He is a player I’ve been really impressed with since I’ve been here. He’s been consistently available, and he’s played a lot of games and has great maturity.

Mikael is a wonderful guy for the team and is an international player. He’s 29 and is at the peak of his career. For me, he’s been outstanding.

Mikael is the type of player I want to have here to help create and build something. I’m sure him and his representatives will speak to the club and hopefully organise that.

Lustig joined Celtic at the beginning of 2012 from Rosenborg, and has made 151 appearances since signing for the Glasgow based side.

The 29-year-old has thrived under Rodgers and has worked well in a back four or a hybrid back three or four formation that has allowed Kieran Tierney to move forward more freely this season.

Having missed today’s game, Lustig will hope to be fit for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Borussia Monchengladbach before the League Cup semi-final next weekend.
