Brendan Rodgers says that striker Leigh Griffiths will have opportunities to take back his place in the Celtic starting eleven but won’t play two up front.
The Scottish international, who netted 40 times for Celtic last season, has seen his usual starting place in the first-team go to French under-21 striker Moussa Dembele due to his clinical form.
Injuries earlier in the season meant Griffiths missed the home game against Rangers in September, but to the surprise of many Dembele filled in and scored a perfect hat-trick in a 5-1 win.
As quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, Rodgers said:
If it was as simple as that it would be alright, wouldn’t it? To play with two players up front you need to have a certain dynamic behind that but you also need certain physical qualities in order to cope with that. But yeah they are both talented players and we will see what the game needs.
I think it’s one where they would have to play in a certain system in order for it to function. The issue with that is we don’t have certain physical qualities in order for that function to work as I would want it to work.
So at times one can play through the middle and one can play off the side but it doesn’t really well for us because they are both natural strikers. If you play a diamond you then need mobility and power in the middle of the field. So it’s not as easy as just putting in the players.
The two Glasgow clubs lock horns again this Sunday in the League Cup semi-final, with Griffiths likely to start on the bench once again.
Though Rodgers remained positive about things and stated that Griffiths will definitely get chances to regain his place in the team.
Sunday will be this first time in which Rodgers has managed a side at Hampden Park, so he’ll have his team fired up for this crucial clash.
Whoever claims the win in this one will face Aberdeen in the League Cup final on November 27th after they defeated Morton 2-0 in the semi-final earlier today.
