An inspired performance from Stuart Armstrong in a thrilling second half earned Celtic all three points as Tom Rogic scored a last minute winner.
Motherwell took the lead on three minutes courtesy of Louis Moult after getting on the end of an inch perfect through ball from Stephen McManus.
On 34 minutes the home side doubled their lead as Mikael Lustig was dispossessed by Ross McLean who picked out Moult inside the box.
Celtic struggled to create any clear openings and didn’t have a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes despite their dominance of the ball.
Leigh Griffiths and Erik Sviatchenko both missed out through illness, but Brendan Rodgers said both should be fine for Tuesday’s trip to face Manchester City.
Celtic reverted to a back three and the substitute Callum McGregor instantly made an impact through the middle following a one-two with Armstrong and halved the deficit on 48 minutes.
Rodgers side continued to create chances and Stuart Armstrong picked out Patrick Roberts at the back post for the equalising goal.
Within two minutes Lionel Ainsworth scored for Motherwell and Armstrong quickly replied from the kick off as Roberts returned the favour for the earlier goal.
