Lustig believes Celtic are on the verge of something special

Mikael Lustig has revealed he feels Celtic are on the brink of something special as he prepares for their opening game of 2017.

The 30-year-old signed a new contract earlier this week until May 2019, and was more than willing to remain with the five-in-a-row league champions.

Speaking to the Scotsman, Lustig revealed:

This almost feels like home now. My family like it here and everything is going well, not just on the football side, but in normal life as well. It feels really good to stay for longer.

For the first time in a couple of years it feels like we are going for something big. It feels like we are going to get better every year.

We have the feeling that we don’t need to sell the best players. We also have a feeling that we want to be in the Champions League, but not just be happy to be in it.

We want to develop there so that in a few years we can become a good Champions League team that can get past the group stages. It’s a long road but it feels like we’ve made a good start.

The last Celtic side to secure a domestic treble was Martin O’Neill’s in his maiden season in 2000/2001, and Rodgers could repeat the feat ad become just the third manager ever to secure a domestic treble.

With the League Cup already in the trophy cabinet, and a 19 point lead with a game in hand, the Hoops will go in search of their third domestic trophy this season.

Rodgers will also be looking to progress from the Champions League group stages in the coming years, with ambitions of progressing beyond the last-16 for the first time ever in the latest format of the competition.

Celtic are in action in that competition later today agaisnt Albion Rovers at the Excelsior Stadium.

Kick-off for the Scottish Cup tie is at 3pm.
