Rodgers says Gordon close to signing new contract

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon is close to signing a new contract with the club, just days after the Scottish champions rejected two bids for his services from Chelsea.

Despite being 34-years-old, Gordan is still seen as a valuable member of the squad and a new deal for the goalkeeper is close to completion.

Rodgers also spoke about the importance of Gordon to his future plans and also how, despite his advanced age, he’s managed to develop into the type of goalkeeper and personality that the manager wants in his squad.

As reported in the Daily Record, manager Brendan Rodgers said:

I have spoken to the club and it is very close, just wrapping up one or two details I believe, 99.9 per cent is all agreed. It will be great news once that is complete.

He is a real pivotal part of how I want to work. I have made it clear since I came in how I wanted to impose my style and the importance of the goalkeeper within that.

And I look at him now, seven months on from when I came in, and he is a totally different character both in personality, character and his output in the team.

Chelsea tried to take Gordon in January as they looked to sign a new backup goalkeeper so that they could let current number two Asmir Begovic leave in search of regular first-team football.

Celtic rejected the bid and Begovic had to stay put. The fact that he did so led to much speculation that the Blues would return for Gordon in the summer as Begovic will still want to leave, but Celtic have looked to secure themselves from such a possibility by tying their keeper down to a new deal.

Gordon will be in action for Rodgers’ side on Saturday again at they take on Inverness in the Scottish Cup at home.
