Today Celtic unveiled their new home kit for next season based on the Lisbon Lions’ historic European Cup win in 1967, and it has certainly got the fans excited.
Anticipation is building around Celtic Park for the next chapter, even though this season hasn’t finished. However with Brendan Rodgers’ first season being successful to date, the Hoops support have high hopes of progressing further in Europe than last time around, and they have every right to be optimistic.
Rodgers could become the first man since Martin O’Neill to secure a historic treble. O’Neill did it in his first season as Celtic manager and Rodgers could well follow suit. The former manager also reached the UEFA Cup Final in his third season; and the Celtic Park faithful are anticipating similar or greater successes with the Carnlough man.
Rodgers’ only blemish this season was his side’s spell in Champions League. It was Celtic’s first time in the group stages since Neil Lennon’s reign, three years previous – which was an achievement in itself. The Bhoys failed to win a match, although they managed two draws with English big-guns Manchester City and a draw in Germany.
The main reason that the Hoops support can afford to get excited for next season is the finances at the club. In previous years Celtic have been known to be a selling club. They would sign prospects cheap, develop them, and sell them on for big money. This process allowed them to stay afloat, and become financially comfortable.
Celtic under Rodgers demonstrated in January that they do not need to or want to sell their key players. Chelsea attempted to sign Moussa Dembele, but Celtic refused to sell him for less than £40 million, demonstrating the club’s ambition to build a team that can compete in Europe.
This summer Celtic will look to keep the likes of Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong and Dembele, as well as adding fresh tenure to their ranks.  However, that is all for the supporters to look forward to.
For now, there is one thing on Rodgers mind. And that is to secure the treble.
