Kieran Tierney will do everything within his power to play for Scotland after sustaining a broken jaw on Celtic’s way to a treble last weekend.
Celtic’s academy graduate was forced off after an elbow from Jayden Stockley in the first-half of the Scottish Cup final, and may have to wear a specially designed gum shield to protect him from sustaining further damage.
The 19-tear-old also lost two teeth in the incident, but that hasn’t ruled him out of next Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against England after he declared himself fit to play for Scotland.
As quoted by the Daily Mail, Scotland manager Gordon Strachan said:
He goes for an assessment at 8:30 on Monday morning. What he needs to protect him will be down to the people Kieran is seeing right now. How to train, when to train etc.
We’ll let Kieran get on with it and not pressurise him at all. We’ve no concerns about him not declaring himself fit unless the doctor says ‘you can’t do this’ for whatever reason. Anything our doctor and the Celtic doctor say, we will do. We don’t make any decisions on people’s fitness.
He did manage to make it back to run up the steps and get the Cup. That’s what adrenaline does for you, the excitement of his team winning. And we do admire that.
It’s a certainty what will happen next week – he will get banged on the face somewhere along the line. Absolute certainty. But he’s got a real street mentality when it comes to playing football. He likes making tackles.
Celtic return to competitive action again in July when they look to make the Champions League group stages and Tierney will play a vital role in helping his boyhood club progress once again.
The young left-back will hope he joins the rest of his club team mates in Saturday’s squad to face England at Hampden on June 10th.
