Fraser Forster will return to Glasgow for this weekend’s World Cup qualifying match between Scotland and England, and the former Celtic shot-stopper has looked back on some of his best memories playing for the side.
After two season-long loan spells, he finally signed a permanent deal with the club in June 2012. The ‘keeper made a name for himself in the Champions League group stages later that year, with a sublime performance in a 2-1 win over Barcelona earning him worldwide praise.
The England international left the Hoops for Southampton in 2014 for a fee of around £10 million, and he’s been first-choice for the Premier League side ever since.
He returns to Glasgow this weekend for the first time since departing almost three years ago, and has recalled some of his fondest memories whilst playing under the Celtic Park floodlights, as well as looking ahead to the clash between the auld enemy this Saturday.
As quoted by the Daily Record, Forster said:
From the first minute I walked through the door to where Celtic was when I left, we just went on such a big journey. As a group we all moved forward together and had some great nights in the Champions League.
We’ve had some great moments in the changing room. We had a great group of lads, folk like Joe Ledley, Gary Hooper and Charlie Mulgrew.
We had such a togetherness within the squad and that was fantastic. If you have that it makes life on the pitch a lot easier. It’s a place I will always want to go back to because I can’t express how much I loved my time at Celtic.
The people I met, the people I got to work with and the journey we went on together. I loved every minute. The fans are amazing and it is just a very special club.
I know quite a lot of the lads and it’ll be a bit strange, probably the first time I’ve faced most of them since leaving Celtic. I still speak to them quite a bit, Scott and Jamesie Forrest – it’ll be great to see them.
Saturday’s match is a crucial one for Scotland, who sit fourth in Group F and are just two points outside of the qualifying spots, as they still have an outside chance of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Russia.
