Brown to sign new deal as Rodgers reveals transfer plans

Celtic captain Scott Brown is set to sign a new and improved contract at the Scottish champions as Brendan Rodgers eyes another player to add to his squad.

The midfielder guided Celtic to a remarkable treble victory last season and has been a faithful servant to the club over the years.

Now Rodgers want to reward his 32-year-old captain by offering him a new long-term deal at the club.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, Rodgers spoke of his captain, saying:

He’s someone I want here while I’m here, that’s for sure. Scott’s a remarkable player who will go down as one of the greatest captains in the history of this club.

He’s done it over the course of ten years here – but what he did last season puts him alongside the greatest captains. He’s still hungry and driven to keep winning and performing.

You see the level he’s at. He’s turned 32 but is coming into an exciting period in his career.  He’s definitely someone I’ll be looking to do something with.

We’ve talked about it a few times. There have been games and the close season – but I’m sure it’s something we’ll look at. He’ll be around for another few years just yet.

The Scottish international signed for the Hoops in 2007 from Edinburgh side Hibs, in a deal worth £4 million.

Brown has won seven League titles at Celtic, as well as winning three League Cup and three Scottish Cup medals.

The Irishman also hinted at the possibility of one more signing after making two acquisitions already this summer in Jonny Hayes and Kundai Benyu, who joined up with the squad yesterday for preseason training.

He added:

We hope we can get one more [player] in. I didn’t think the group needed surgery. We didn’t need to go out and get a whole raft of players – and the club didn’t need that.

The Hoops’ pre-season continues as they face Rapid Vienna today in Austria, with kickoff at 4pm.
