Griffiths banned by UEFA for “provoking” Linfield fans

Leigh Griffiths has been banned for one game for “provoking spectators” at the end of Celtic’s clash with Linfield at Windsor Park.

Celtic have also been fined a further €4,500 for “improper conduct”, having received five bookings during the game, and Linfield have been fined €10,000 and will have a partial stadium closure for throwing objects and spectators invading the field of play.

Prior to the incident at full-time, Griffiths had a glass bottle of Buckfast and other other objects hurled at him from the stands – and at the same end of the stadium, Jonny Hayes had a banana thrown at him.

Ironically Celtic only exceeded the booking quota when Griffiths pointed out a glass bottle and other objects being thrown from the stands and was deemed to be time wasting.

Scott Brown also had coins thrown at him by Linfield fans, as Celtic coasted to a 2-0 win at Windsor Park in the first leg with goals from Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic.

Last night the Hoops beat the Belfast side 4-0 with goals from Scott Sinclair, Tom Rogic and Stuart Armstrong.

Celtic will now face Rosenborg in the next round with the home tie taking place on Wednesday July 26th at 7:45pm and the return leg will take place on Wednesday August 2nd at 7:15pm in Norway.
