Brendan Rodgers was delighted with Celtic’s dominant display in their 2-0 win over Rangers in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox.
It took a 50th minute bullet from Tom Rogic to open the scoring after an attempt on goal from Patrick Roberts fell into his path.
That was the catalyst to the fire, and 15 minutes later, Leigh Griffiths made it 2-0 cooly dispatching Roberts’ through ball into the back of the net.
The expectation prior to the game was that Moussa Dembele would be rested ahead of Wednesday’s pivotal game against Anderlecht in the Champions League, although he did feature for the final ten minutes of the game.
Rodgers reflected on the result speaking to the media after the full-time whistle.
He said:
It was a very, very good performance coming here and it was a great atmosphere today. The boys coped with it very well. We scored two, could have had more but importantly, we were strong defensively as well.
We started very well but in the final third of the pitch we just didn’t make the last pass, which could have put us ahead earlier. We worked our way through into the game and I thought second half the condition and the quality of the players came through.
I don’t know [if Rangers are getting closer]. We can’t win every game by five or six but I think we showed a great level of performance and management of the game today.
The Irishman went on to praise the performance of Griffiths.
Speaking about the 27-year-old, he said:
Leigh’s movement was always a threat. He drags defenders out of position and really tries to get into the spaces that can hurt them.
I think his movement and finish for the goal was outstanding. He was very good, but today was a very good team performance too.
The unbeaten domestic run has now reached 57 matches, with Celtic top of the table by five points ahead of Aberdeen who have a game in hand.
Rodgers will now look ahead to the Hoops’ crucial away tie in Brussels on Wednesday.
The Bhoys will look to forget their opening match of the group stages against PSG, and get their first points on the board as they aim to progress and secure European football beyond Christmas.
