Celtic star Patrick Roberts is more excited than most to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, as it presents a chance for him to go toe-to-toe with one of his childhood heroes; Arjen Robben.
Roberts has always admired the Dutchman’s style of play, and admits that he takes some of his own game from watching the Bayern Munich winger (via the Daily Record):
I have always enjoyed the way he comes inside and shoots.
I’ve tried to emulate that since he was at Chelsea and I was only a young boy, to come in and shoot like that
Roberts, who is on loan at Celtic from Premier League leaders Manchester City, has scored once in five appearances this season, after 11 goals in 47 outings in 2016-17.
He continued:
He [Robben] has retired from international football now, but players like that put the hard work in in training throughout the years and that is why they are on the biggest stage in world football.
Hopefully, one day that can be me, but I need to keep practising my technique
Just 20 years old, Roberts has an opportunity that not many players his age get; the opportunity to face some of the world’s finest talent in the Champions League. He will be up against names such as Jerome Boateng and David Alaba in the Bayern Munich back line, but insists that that does not worry him:
The win over Anderlecht just showed our quality and our intent this year, particularly after the first game.
We will see how the game pans out. The first thing is to go out there with a strong mindset and, hopefully, the game pans out and we can get a good result for us.

I want to push on in European competition, which is an aim. Hopefully we can do that.
