A dismal second leg performance in Russia saw Celtic crash out of the Europa League after a 3-0 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.
For all the promise Celtic showed last week, it took the home side just seven minutes to undo all their hard work from a corner kick.
Branislav Ivanovic rose highest to reach Leanardo Parades’ corner and headed home unmarked after losing Jozo Simunovic inside the box.
On 27 minutes Daler Kuzyaev doubled Zenit’s lead after a goalkeeping howler from Dorus de Vries and more questionable defending from the Hoops.
The midfielder was given a free run at goal and fired a powerful shot directly at the ‘keeper, who struggled to keep it out.
Zenit put the tie beyond doubt on the 61st minute as Aleksandr Kokorin got in behind Mikael Lustig at the back post to tap home Ivanovic’s cross.
Brendan Rodgers will now have to galvanise his squad ahead of Sunday’s top of the table clash with Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
Here are the player ratings for tonight’s game.
Dorus de Vries 2/10
Good save down to his left to keep out Paredes’ shot but couldn’t keep out Ivanovic’s header from the resulting corner. Woeful goalkeeping for the second goal. Poor positioning for the third goal.
Mikael Lustig 1/10
Sloppy pass and then lazily slid on the floor getting nowhere near Kokorin as he raced through on goal. Switched off for the third goal allowing Kokorin to run in behind to score. Poor passing, poor decision making wildly running into midfield and leaving space down the right flank. Awful performance.
Jozo Simunovic 3/10
Beaten far too easily in the air by Ivanovic for the opening goal having failed to keep up with his man.
Kristoffer Ajer 4/10
Found himself in no man’s land and on the wrong side of his man for the first goal. Indifferent at the back once again.
Kieran Tierney 3/10
Got forward at will down the left wing but was faced with the experienced Ivanovic this time round. Struggled to get the ball into the box and allowed Ivanovic at the other end to set up the third goal.
Scott Brown 4/10
Caught flat footed and let his man run freely before scoring. Had a poor game and gave the ball away a number of times in midfield.
Eboue Kouassi 3/10
Wayward passing and struggled in midfield to do anything in either phase of the game. Hooked off at halftime.
James Forrest 6/10
Quick to get up to speed on the wing and won back possession pressing the ball. Got two players booked early on as a result. Was pushed back very deep as the first half went on. More positive second half and was the only player looking to make things happen and threaten Zenit.
Olivier Ntcham 4.5/10
Attempted to link the play and was the only player making things happen in midfield. Poor attempt on goal early in the second half.
Callum McGregor 3/10
Poor start to the game giving the ball away twice in Celtic’s own half. Peripheral figure in the Celtic midfield as he struggled to get involved.
Moussa Dembele 4/10
Good hold up play in the opening minute to get Celtic up the field and continued to hold the ball up bringing others into play in the first half. Two good defensive headers to clear crosses in the box. Came deeper as the game went on to try and get something going but struggled in the second half.
Tom Rogic 4.5/10
Came on at halftime for Kouassi and got Celtic’s first shot on goal within a minute. Looked knackered by the 65th minute and is still miles off the pace for match fitness. Has a few efforts on goal but nothing too challenging.
Scott Sinclair 3/10
Replaced McGregor with just under 30 minutes to go in the game. Did nothing of note when he came on.
Charly Musonda 4/10
Substituted on for Forrest with just over 20 minutes to go in the game. Got down the line and at his man, at least trying to make things happen.
