Benkovic looking forward to ‘special’ Europa League clash
Celtic central defender Filip Benkovic has said that he is looking forward to the club’s clash with RB Leipzig in the Europa League.
Benkovic claims that Europa League games are special, as he gets to face off against some of the best players and clubs in Europe.
Speaking to The Evening Times, Benkovic said this:
European football is top for me. These games against teams like Leipzig are special because the players are all international level and they are main players in the national teams.
It’s a challenge for us to see where we are and to try and be competitive.
We want to compete and to show that to everyone.
They played very good football last year – even Bayern Munich could not say this was a certain three points because of the level Leipzig have reached.
But we can’t go there to give up. We must fight for the 90 minutes and try to get some points.
Celtic signed Benkovic on a season-long loan from Leicester in the summer, with the defender impressing so far.
He has five appearances this season for Celtic, with four in the Scottish league and one in the Europa League.
Brendan Rodgers is expected to start Benkovic in defence alongside Boyata on Thursday against Leipzig.
