The task of facing RB Leipzig in Germany looked tough when the draw was made for the Europa League group stages and it looks even tougher now as Celtic have travelled to Germany without four key players, whilst a fifth is a major injury doubt.
Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths will miss the clash due to injury, Tom Rogic misses out due to illness whilst James Forrest is suspended.
Added to that, defender Filip Benkovic is a major doubt and is unlikely to feature.
With that all being said, here’s the XI that we expect Brendan Rodgers to select this evening.
Craig Gordon is the club’s number one and he’s certain to start.
Cristian Gamboa’s rise back from obscurity should continue with an away start in the Europa League.
Dedryck Boyata is one of the first names on the teamsheet at present.
With Benkovic likely to miss out, Jozo Simunovic will start alongside Boyata. He’ll likely play at the weekend too as Boyata will be suspended.
With Scott Brown out injured, Kieran Tierney should captain the side from left-back.
Olivier Ntcham will be tasked with leading the midfield for Celtic in Brown’s absence.
Eboue Kouassi has hardly had a look in but with injuries taking a toll on the squad, he’s expected to get the nod this evening.
Callum McGregor is likely to play in an advanced central role and he’ll be tasked with providing an attacking spark.
With James Forrest suspended, Lewis Morgan is likely to get a rare chance to impress on the wing.
Ryan Christie is another who looks set to benefit from the injury crisis. He should start on the opposite flank to Morgan.
Celtic might not get a tonne of chances so they’ll need Odsonne Edouard to be as clinical as possible if he does get the opportunity to put the ball in the back of the Leipzig net.
