Mikael Lustig wants to stay at Celtic and has requested a contract extension from the club.
Speaking about his future to the Swedish newspaper, Expressen, the veteran defender said he’s unsure about where he’ll be playing next season, but said he hopes to stay at Celtic.
There’s nothing really to say there because it’s nothing. I have a contract with Celtic and hope to extend here. The ball lies with them. If they want me to continue, I will stay here.
The defender’s contract with Celtic expires at the end of June and when asked if he’ll make a move to AIK Stockholm if Celtic do not offer him an extension, Lustig confirmed that he’s not got any plans set in stone as he wants to remain at Celtic Park.
No if that happens, we’ll see [a move back to AIK]. Nothing is clear that we should move home in that case, we might have another option to go abroad. But I hope to stay at Celtic. If I don’t, I’m sure I will find something that I will enjoy. The important thing is that it should be good for the family and also for football.
After recent reports which suggested that Celtic are in the market for a new right-back, it remains to be seen if Lustig will be offered the contract extension that he wants.
