Celtic could beat rivals Rangers to the signing of Sligo Rovers defender John Mahon.

According to a report from the Express, as cited on the Daily Record, both the Hoops and Rangers have been scouting the youngster.

Mahon is a Republic of Ireland U21 international, who is also believed to be wanted by clubs in England, with Derby County and Blackburn Rovers credited with an interest.

The good news for Celtic is that the report states the defender would rather join up with the Hoops and move to Parkhead.

Celtic’s head of recruitment Willie McStay has reportedly been keeping a close eye on the player and was in attendance during Sligo’s 1-1 draw with Dundalk last Friday.

Mahon is under contract until the end of next season and given how highly he is rated by the club, he is unlikely to come cheap for Celtic if they want to bolster their ranks in the near future.
