Brendan Rodgers: 6
On the domestic front it has been bliss for Brendan Rodgers with unprecedented success.
However, his style in Europe especially away from home didn’t always suit his players.
The insistence on playing out from the back cost Celtic dearly against Valencia at home but his change to a back three at the Mestalla to combat Valencia’s two strikers certainly seemed to work.
Craig Gordon: 6
Made some outstanding saves in the group stage which sometimes he isn’t given enough credit for.
Kept the score down away in Salzburg and made some super stops at home but we will all remember that Karius-esque roll out that gifted Salzburg’s Hannes Wolf their second goal.
Seemed to struggle with his distribution throughout, part of the reason why he has been dropped recently.
Scott Bain: 7
Only featured in the two legs against Valencia where he could do nothing to stop the Spaniards at home and excelled in the away game with some good saves.
Mikael Lustig: 4
Part of the reason why Celtic dropped down to the Europa League and his form didn’t improve much in the group stage.
His experience was no doubt valuable but his ageing legs struggled to support the attacks and being unable to stop crosses was a key problem throughout the campaign.
Cristian Gamboa: 5
Let himself down after a good start in Germany as a rash tackle allowed his opponents in to kill the game and was hooked at half time after picking up a knock in that challenge.
Came off the bench away to Rosenborg as Celtic saw out the victory.
Jeremy Toljan: 5
Seems harsh to judge the German after such a short period of time.
He attacked well at home against Valencia but was caught way out of position as they grabbed their second.
Picked up two yellows in the away leg which made a difficult task almost impossible for his teammates.
Dedryck Boyata: 6
His calm knock down for Griffiths’ winner in the opening game cannot be ignored whilst he struck up a good partnership with Benkovic at the back.
Featured in every game apart form the final group game and gets a mixed report for his defending as at times he didn’t read the game quick enough, particularly in Germany as Celtic disappointingly lost 2-0.
Filip Benkovic: 7
Came into the side right in time for the start of the group stages and was a cut above seemingly winning everything that came his way.
Helped to get two clean sheets and played well, like many others, against Leipzig at home but was well missed in the defeat to Valencia last week.
Kristoffer Ajer: 7
Missed two big chances in Europe this season as he put one over the bar with an empty net in front of him at home to Salzburg before heading over away in Valencia with Celtic’s best chance of the game.
Replaced the injured Lustig in the Salzburg game early on forcing him to play right-back and also saw out a vast majority of last night’s second leg in this position and put in a very good shift on both occasions.
Seemed to really grow and confidence in the Mestalla and will get better with every game.
Jozo Simunovic: 6
Came off injured after a tough night in Germany but played the full 90 against Salzburg in the final group game and in the double header against Valencia.
Didn’t cover himself in glory as the Spaniards racked up two goals at Parkhead but just about made up for it with a solid display at the back last night.
Jack Hendry: 4
Played the full game in a tough loss in Austria as he failed to show any real defensive instinct and couldn’t stop the goals going in.
Not the type of game where he should be relied upon as he continues to develop his confidence.
Kieran Tierney: 8
Played in every minute of the group stages and was handed the captain’s armband away in Germany and Austria.
Was solid defensively throughout and even grabbed himself a goal in the crucial win over RB Leipzig.
Emilio Izaguirre: 3
Was simply out of his depth against Valencia and found himself at fault in both goals.
Sums up Celtic current state of recruitment that was playing in the last 32 tie and featuring on the bench during the group stages.
Jonny Hayes: 7
Seems to get thrown into the team at random points in the season but coped remarkably well at the Mestalla playing at left wing back.
Attacked with so much positively and gave his all to get back and help out his defensive partners.
Scott Brown: 7
Lead by example in a number of games and was never afraid to take the ball when others would hide away from possession.
Missed both legs against Leipzig with a knee injury as well as the loss in Austria but came on in Trondheim to help seal the points and showed his worth against quality opposition coming on at half time in the last group game.
Olivier Ntcham: 5
Got himself on the scoresheet late on against Salzburg after initially missing his penalty kick, albeit didn’t really affect the final outcome.
Needs to be more controlled in his passing in these big European games as in Salzburg his passing was particularly sloppy.
Youssouf Mulumbu: 5
Got two of just five Celtic appearances in the group stages and was one of few who put in a battling performance as Salzburg won 3-1 but had a bit of a nightmare at home to Leipzig when he came on as a sub to close things out as he nearly had a hand in gifting the Germans a late equaliser.
Callum McGregor: 7
Ever reliable as the only Celt to play every minute of every game in the Europa League this season.
Was always pretty comfortable on the ball no matter the venue and showed his versatility as he dropped back into Scott Brown’s role very well allowing Ryan Christie and Tom Rogic to thrive ahead of him in the victory over Leipzig.
Ryan Christie: 6
Put in a terrific display as his side beat the Bundesliga opposition. Pressed the game very well before his inch perfect assist for Edouard to net the winner.
Still got some developing to do at this level but an impressive player considering where he was in the summer.
Tom Rogic: 5
The team missed his creativity in the two defeats away at the Red Bull sides and also in the Valencia tie as the Aussie undergoes Knee surgery.
Looked dangerous against Rosenborg in Norway but the Celtic fans have still to witness him at his very best in Europe.
James Forrest: 6
Was unlucky to see red in Salzburg ruling him out of the away game at Leipzig but returning to provide two assist in the group stages.
The first was a cut-back for Tierney to fire Celtic in front in the 2-1 win against the Germans after good driving run and the second, a lovely clipped ball for Sinclair to head in the decisive goal in Trondheim.
Scott Sinclair: 6
Scored the only goal of the game in Norway with a strong header.
Last night’s loss was the only game in which the Englishman didn’t feature, however he still seemed to lack confidence when attacking in a number of situations.
Mikey Johnston: 6
Gained some valuable experience as he made two cameos off the bench last night and in the opening group game.
Added a bit of flair to an average performance against Rosenborg as Celtic eventually got the points.
Lewis Morgan: 5
Did his best as he was thrown into the starting eleven in Germany but it was a tough outing for the youngster.
Odsonne Edouard: 6
Grabbed two goals in the group stage as the Frenchman struck early away at Salzburg before Celtic eventually crumbled and netted the winner against Leipzig at home.
Always looked a goal threat although he needs to improve his hold up play as he continues to develop as a man striker.
Leigh Griffiths: 6
Nodded in that vital late winner to kick things off against Rosenborg but failed to strike up a partnership when the two started in Austria in the 3-1 defeat to Salzburg.
Oliver Burke: 6
His lightening pace up front was a clear strength for Celtic against Valencia but like Edouard is still learning the role.
