Celtic look set to battle Aston Villa and Leeds United in the summer for the services of Barnsley centre-back Liam Lindsay, according to the Mirror, cited by the Birmingham Mail.
The 23-year-old has been a key member of the Barnsley squad this season, as the Tykes aim for an immediate return to the Championship.
Lindsay originally came through the youth academy at Partick Thistle and spent five years as a professional for The Jags, before moving to South Yorkshire in 2017.
Since then, Lindsay has made over 80 appearances in the Football League and his consistent displays this term has caught the eye of numerous clubs, including Celtic.
According to the report, Celtic will have to battle Aston Villa and Leeds United if they are to secure the defender’s services.
Stoke City and Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion are also reportedly monitoring Lindsay’s current situation.
If Lindsay is to leave Barnsley this summer, the Tykes will demand a fee of up to £5 million, despite signing the Scot for just £350,000 in 2017.
Five alternative young Football League defenders Celtic could target:
Joe Rodon - Swansea City
The Welsh defender has impressed this season and earned his first senior international call-up in October. Celtic may face plenty of competition for Rodon’s services.
Krystian Bielik - Charlton Athletic
Bielik, currently on loan at Charlton from Arsenal, has been a standout performer for The Addicks this season. The 21-year-old has been a regular at the heart of the defence and could well be a potential signing for the Hoops next season.
Adam Webster - Bristol City
Webster has been a key member of the Bristol City squad after joining from Ipswich Town in the summer. The 24-year-old could be another option for Celtic in the coming months.
Ezri Konsa - Brentford
Highly-rated Brentford youngster Ezri Konsa has attracted plenty of interest this season. Premier League giants Arsenal were linked with a move for the defender back in January, so if Celtic could persuade Konsa to move to Scotland, it could well be a major signing for the Hoops.
Jordan Storey - Preston North End
Preston defender Jordan Storey has enjoyed a lengthy run in the side this year and has impressed under Alex Neil. The 21-year-old, who joined from Exeter City last summer, could well be a shrewd signing if Celtic explore the possibilities of bringing the youngster to Celtic Park.
