Celtic are reportedly interested in landing Wigan Athletic star Nick Powell this summer.
The Hoops were linked with a move to sign the midfielder during the January transfer window, but he stayed put at the DW Stadium to finish the season with the Latics.
However, as the summer draws ever closer, it seems the race for Powell’s signature is on. According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, Celtic are among the clubs who have established an interest in signing him.
The Scottish Premiership leaders are likely to focus on bolstering their squad in the upcoming transfer window, and Powell appears to be a target of theirs.
Celtic will face competition from a plethora of sides from across Europe, though, with rivals Rangers also in the hunt for his signature.
Powell, according to TEAMtalk, is also admired by Bundesliga duo Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce are also keen.
However, it is claimed that the ex-Manchester United youngster would favour a move to a British side. Premier League pair Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion are named as potential suitors, and Championship promotion hopefuls Norwich City and Derby County are interested.
Why Powell would be a smart signing for Celtic
Goals from midfield
Powell has been in productive form for Wigan this season. He’s contributed with seven assists and, better yet, has found the back of the net seven times himself.
Adding another technically-gifted midfielder to the ranks would be a smart move from Celtic. Powell would provide the Hoops with a different style of midfielder, and would undoubtedly improve the options within the squad.
Powell is only 25-years-old. Signing a player in the midst of his prime years would be an excellent move from Celtic, as they’d be landing a ready-made starter who still has plenty left in the tank.
Powell’s contract at Wigan expires at the end of the season. Therefore, he’d be available on a free transfer. With Celtic unlikely to spend big this summer, the midfielder would be a signing that shoulders little to no risk.
