Signing Adebayor would be a step in the wrong direction for Celtic
Some fans are talking about the possibility of Emmanuel Adebayor moving to Celtic, but it could prove to be a poor investment from Celtic’s recruitment team if the signing is made.
Adebayor has had a glorious career in football over the last 20 odd years. He has played at some of the biggest clubs in the world with Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Tottenham.
In his prime at Arsenal especially, he was regarded as one of the most prolific target men in the Premier League and there were few defenders that could stop him when he was in full flow.
However, that time is long gone. He is now 35 years of age and is currently playing in the Turkish Super Lig with Istanbul Basaksehir. – finishing second in the league last season. With Istanbul in the 2017/18 season, he had a great season – scoring 15 and assisting three in 30 matches in the league.
This form dramatically declined, though, in last season’s campaign – only netting three goals in 19 matches. It is obvious he is not the player he used to be and Celtic should be very wary of this as he is a player who looks on a downward slope.
Although he can offer great experience to other players in the dressing room, this is not what the side is looking for at the moment. There is a severe lack of depth throughout the squad and this can be seen in the attack as well.
Odsonne Edouard is obviously the main striker at the club, with Leigh Griffiths returning to the side and an unproven Vakoun Issouf Bayo being an option as well. There is no telling for sure how valuable the two strikers, who have had very little game time over the last year, are going to be for the Hoops next season.
Would you want Adebayor at Celtic?
Yes
No
If Neil Lennon does want to add more attackers though, we need to look for young hungry players who want to prove their worth at a big club – not just someone who wants to finish up their career. Adebayor will be on high wages in Turkey as well which we would need to match if we were to bring him to Celtic Park.
Having someone who could potentially be our 3rd or 4th choice striker as one of our highest paid players would be ridiculous. We cannot have another situation like Carlton Cole or a Colin Kazim-Richards. It would be a massive step backwards in terms of Celtics development.
