Celtic have seemingly been handed a major boost in their attempts to sign Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers.
According to Danish outlet Ekstrabladet, cited by HITC, the Bees are close to signing Celta Vigo midfielder Mathias Jensen in a deal worth £3.6 million.
Brentford have already brought in a midfielder in Christian Norgaard, so the imminent piece of business by the Championship looks likely to result in Sawyers making the move to Celtic Park.
The Hoops have been heavily tipped to sign the powerful midfielder ahead of the new season and are thought to be willing to pay £2.5 million for the 27-year-old.
Neil Lennon has already brought in midfielder Luca Connell from Bolton Wanderers and Sawyers could turn out to be the Northen Irishman’s fourth summer signing.
The box-to-box midfielder was a key member of the Brentford side last season, making 46 appearances in all competitions, and if the Bees complete the signing of Jensen, Sawyers could well complete a move north in the coming weeks.
Why Sawyers would be a good Celtic addition
Sawyers would bring a wealth of senior experience to Celtic Park. The midfielder has already made over 270 senior appearances during his stints with both Walsall and Brentford.
Prime of his career
At 27, Sawyers has shown in recent years that he is at the top of his game with some impressive displays. The midfielder is known for his energetic displays, impressive passing range and no-nonsense approach.
At just £2.5 million, Sawyers would definitely be seen as a shrewd signing. The midfielder wouldn’t feel any pressure over a hefty price tag and would play with freedom under Lennon.
Sawyers has hardly missed a game for both Walsall and Brentford over the past six seasons. The 27-year-old is clearly in physical condition, so Lennon wouldn’t have to worry about the midfielder picking up slight niggles.
