Former Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal has revealed the surprise role he is playing in a potential deal for the Hoops to sign Hatem Abd Elhamed.
Previous reports have suggested that Abd Elhamed is closing in on a move to join Neil Lennon’s side, providing that any potential work permit problems are avoided along the way.
A £1.6 million deal is believed to be close and Kayal has explained why he thinks the player should complete a move this summer.
This is a big opportunity for Hatem. I’m so happy for him to get the chance to join a big club like Celtic. Obviously he asked me for advice because I would class him as a friend.
What did I say to him? I told him that it will probably be the best day of his life when he signs for Celtic. He’s a really good player and, most importantly, he’s ready to be a Celtic player.
The versatile defender is expected to sign a four-year contract with Celtic as Lennon continues to spend on his squad this summer.
The Israel international will join the club with a wealth of experience under his belt and helps to fill the void left by Mikael Lustig.
Pros and cons of a potential move to sign Abd Elhamed
Pro: European experience
The defender has played in Europe and that has to be considered as a must when looking at Celtic’s recruitment this summer with the club looking to progress in the Champions League.
As with any deal, it will always be a risk. Will he adapt to the demands of Scottish football? Is he enough to replace Lustig? All questions that will be answered over the coming months.
Pro: A postive approach
Given Arsenal’s interest in Kieran Tierney, Celtic have been heavily linked with Carl Jenkinson, so it is refreshing to see the club pursue their own targets and trust their scouting network.
Con: Lack of game time a concern?
Looking back through Abd Elhamed’s career, the defender has not played a great deal of football in recent years, something that could be a cause for concern.
